This document details how Fighting, Sword, and Dodge techniques in SaGa Frontier can be learned.
The lists in this document are rearranged from information ripped from the game's executable file, matched to tech names, posted to the GameFAQs SaGa Frontier message board, and thankfully, released unto the public domain by a prestigious video game hacker by the moniker of Alex (W.) Jackson.
Quick & Dirty Tech Trees - a few quick paths to strong techniques
Spark
Both a noun and a verb. To spark is to learn a technique in mid-battle. Also, the act of sparking can be referred to as a spark.
Difficulty
How difficult it is to spark a technique when using a technique that's already known. The higher the difficulty is, the less chance you have of learning the new technique. Difficulty is a relative scale, based on a number of variables such as the strength of the monster on which the technique is being used, the strength of the character using the technique, the status of your and the monster's parties, the number of characters standing, and more.
For reactive techniques such as Deflect and Sway Back, the difficulty given is the difficulty to spark the technique when the character is attacked during a turn when he is using the listed technique. For Dodge techniques, the difficulty of sparking the technique is controlled by which move hits the learner.
Alkaiser's Helm
This symbol indicates a spark that is only available to Alkaiser.

Unless noted otherwise, the layout of this section is thus: each technique will be listed, and underneath it will be listed all the techniques that have a chance to spark it, with the difficulty next to them in parenthesis. So, for example,
Haze-to-Wheel
Bear Crush Air Throw Al-Blaster Some dodges in this section have the same technique listed twice, with a hexidecimal number next to them. These two listings are actually different attacks; the Mystic and monster versions, I presume.
This section lists which techniques may be sparked while using a technique, with the difficulty for each in parenthesis, thusly:
Thrust Slash (36) Wheel Slash
means that Haze-to-Wheel may be learned from Wheel Slash with a difficulty factor of 36. Got it? Good. Let's kick it off with...(20) Smash

(29) Wing(16) Thunder Thrust
means that while using Thrust, Thunder Thrust may be learned at 16 difficulty, Dead End at 21 difficulty, or Triple Thrust at 29 difficulty. So you see.
